The laptop is a multi-modal tool for me and for the artists I am working with in my current research. My research into contemporary art workflows is conducted largely using the laptop, as I travel from studio to studio undertaking the research. In many of the artists’ studios there is also another laptop of the same brand and – often – model.
The laptop is the tool that facilitates an always-on mode of work: much of the interview transcription is undertaken on train journeys from the interview location back to where I live.
The laptop is the constant witness to my travel, to my typed work, to the various surfaces and environments in which I conduct research.
I look at the laptop. But it is also possible the laptop looks at me. There is a certain amount of evidence to suggest that we cannot entirely necessarily rely on the visible indicators of e.g. the camera operation of technology such as laptops. As a result my laptop camera is covered with a sticky note. Two other sticky notes are also attached to my laptop: one is pink, and on the left-hand side. It contains handwritten notes made by me to myself. These are written in pencil, and the motion of my hands on the keys over many hours means that my left hand has rested on those pencil notes and smudged them. The right-hand sticky note is smaller and again is hand written, but in ink this time and so it has better survived the manual use of the keyboard. I recently showed an interactive installation about digital infrastructures (which also involved the use of this laptop in the gallery space). This was written by friends who attended this installation.
The laptop can connect to the Internet through wifi, when I’m in a location that allows that connection to happen. The Internet is an important idea in my research as it is the means by which digital information seems to usually be exchanged between the artists I am working with in my research.
